Audition scripts

MAN 1 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Man 1 is holding a photo showing it to woman 3
MAN 1
That’s little Amelia, she’s 2. And that’s Tommy, he’s 5 on friday
WOMAN 3
They’re beautiful
MAN 1
(Starting to cry and attempting to hide it)
I promised i’d take him to the pictures.
WOMAN 3
Hey! It’s alright!
MAN 1
You should have seen how excited he was.
WOMAN 3
I’m sorry
MAN 1
(Looking up at her in realisation)
I can’t let him down. I promised.
WOMAN 3
What are you going to do?
MAN 1
I’m going home to my boy. Whatever it takes. I’m going home to my family.

MAN 2 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Man 2 is hiding behind a pillar clutching his bag.
MAN 2
(Whispered to himself)
It’s not real. You’re ok. you’re fine... It’s a dream. It’s a...
Woman 1 grabs him by his shirt and holds a blade to his
throat. He holds his hands up above his head

WOMAN 1
I’m not a fan of an easy kill, but
such is life.
MAN 2
No,no look I’m unarmed! I’m
unarmed!
WOMAN 1
That’s your problem, not mine
MAN 2
I’m not a threat to you! Please!
WOMAN 1
Shame, it’s less fun this way.
MAN 2
Please, I’m begging you! Let me go
I can’t hurt you! Let me go, let me
run!
WOMAN 1
Well as you asked so nicely, I’ll
count to three.
She lets him go and he stands frozen to the spot. She leans
in closer to him.
(Whispered)

Go!

MAN 3 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Man 3 is hidden on the stairs aiming with his rifle down at
the woman who is scanning the area for danger. She is
holding a handgun which is shaking in her hands
.
MAN 3
You will not take me down little
girl!
"Fear not, nor be afraid. For the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee,
nor forsake thee."
He cocks and aims. As he fires the woman screams out in
shock.

Shit.
WOMAN 2
Where are you!? Come on face me!
Look me in the eye as you kill me!
(Screaming)
Come on then!
MAN 3
He cocks and aims again. The woman is looking up panicking.
(Said with anger this time)

"No sacrifice for sins is left."
The gunfire echoes in the silence.
There you go.
He holds the rifle with the bayonet gently resting against
his face as he shuts his eyes and breathes out.

WOMAN 1 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Woman 1 is looking into a hidden camera (directly to camera)
smiling sadistically.

WOMAN 1
(said quietly)
The lioness will stalk her prey
before the attack, savoring the
moment. My mother used to tell me
not to play with my food.
(smirking)
She’s gone now. And anyway, whose
eating..?
She turns away from the camera and sees Man 2 hiding
unsuccessfully behind a small wall.

(She whistles)
It’s play time junior.
She throws a blade in his direction.

WOMAN 2 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Woman 2 grabs man 2 and pulls him out of danger. They duck
behind some crates.

WOMAN 2
You were a sitting target you idiot! If you’re not more careful than that, you’ll be dead before the day is out.
MAN 2
Oh I am sorry,it’s just...
(sarcastically)
it’s been a while since I last had to fight for my life!
WOMAN 2
If you don’t want my help fine, I can leave you here to die.
MAN 2
Why would you help me!?
WOMAN 2
I’ll defend myself here but I won’t just stand by and watch someone else suffer.
MAN 2
And I’m supposed to just believe
that?
WOMAN 2
Believe what you want, like I said I can go if you want me to. It’s not like I’m busy surviving or anything...
She gets up to leave
MAN 2
Look, I’m sorry OK. I just don’t know who to trust
WOMAN 2
Don’t trust anyone! That’s rule number one.

WOMAN 3 - AUDITION SCRIPT
Woman 3 and Man 2 are both crouched behind a wall.
MAN 2
I’ve never even been in a fight! How am I supposed to do this?
WOMAN 3
You aren’t supposed to that’s the whole point!
Man 2 sighs and looks at his hands
I don’t see how everyone seems to find it so easy to just kill each other just because they were told to. This is so wrong.
MAN 2
I’m sure they all have their reasons.
WOMAN 3
What, so now there is a valid reason for taking someone’s life?!
They see man 3 run past and they watch silently until is gone.
MAN 2
He’s a father. He just wants to go home.
WOMAN 3
We all want to go home! But if I get to go home, I won’t be going a murderer, I would rather die than
that.

Logic - Soundtrack construction

To edit the soundtrack for our product, I used Logic pro, as this would allow me to professionally finish the effect of the base track.

By adding effects such as an EQ (equaliser) I was able to improve the quality of my soundtrack as well as edit it to fit my purpose for the final product by cutting out the unwanted frequencies.

I added a compressor to normalise the levels and avoid high and low peaks.

Creating the typography

When making the typography, the first thing I had to do was find a base font that I wanted to start working from.  From our past research we decided on the font Bloody impact.

To create the typography I will be using Adobe Photoshop. After creating a background layer and colouring it black, I added an additional adjustment layer to add the text to invert the colour.

I then edited this text layer by adding adjustment layers to add drop shadows, inner shadows, bevel and emboss, stroke and gradient overlay following the colour scheme of gold and blue.

I then added a duplicate text layer just below the original text layer which created the effect of a whole text shadow.

By cutting out the text and making the background transparent, the typography was therefore transferable to our 3 media products.

Lighting equipment

The lights which we will be using are:

Arri 650w Tungsten Fresnel

These lights allow us to follow the three point lighting rule and light the characters features as well as scenery.
Arri Minicyc Tungsten Floodlight

This filmlight will allow us to create a general wash over certain scenes as well as help in achieving certain shots such as the silhouette desired in the window shot.

Uni-com LED lantern

These Uni-com LED lights allow us to highlight specific features on the characters face as well as emphasising wounds.  The lights are extremely light and portable allowing us to use them even working on difficult locations.

Voiceover

In Post production of our trailer, we wanted to add a voiceover in order to add some more depth to it. I wrote the script for this following the themes of survival and chance which are ongoing themes that run through our trailer. The script was as follows

"Sometimes in life, a bit of luck and chance goes a long way,
when you're playing with dice,
But when you're playing with guns, its not about luck, or chance,
it's about skill and nerve
it's all about raw survival instinct,
You know we're watching,
but what we wanna know is,
Are You Ready?"

The recording took several hours to accomplish the desired tone but eventually we had one recording which matched the urban style of the film.

Final Location

For our final location we will be using the Thames Barrier Industrial estate.

Following our research we knew that we were looking for an old industrial area which could potentially look deserted. Upon finding the estate, we were happy to acknowledge that it met our needs almost perfectly providing us with an area which could hold any hiding places for our characters and somewhere where we could adapt shots from the storyboard around.

We secured several locations to film inside such as the barrier animal care clinic, which holds old kennels with cages which we are able to use for
jail cells as well as an industrial style yard.  We
also secured an old tyre unit which we are able to clear and use as a disused building with industrial looking metallic walls ideal for our setting.

The estate has many side roads with industrial units either side which have the perfect qualities for the effect that we are looking for. There is a tankard and several metallic structures around the estate which can be used as hiding places in our shots.  We also located an old abandoned pub called 'The Victoria'which has the perfect atmosphere for the film in its basement due to its concrete floors, natural cold lighting and steel bars.

Sound deconstruction - Urban action trailers

I am going to look at genre ideals surrounding the sound of action trailers to find the main themes, to then decide whether to conform to, or subvert these in our trailer

The Bank Job:
- Snippets of dialogue from within the film (diegetic)
- Backing track with strong bass and drum beat.
- Editing matches and compliments music
backing track louder with important pieces of typography to emphasise them.
- Additional sound effects of cameras clicking etc.
- Song changes to more upbeat and playful
- Use of comical lines

Fight Club:
- Internal dialogue from film
- Comical lines straight away
- Commentary explaining plot
- Quiet backing track behind all of the dialogue.
- Mostly diegetic sound throughout
- Sound track only picks up right at the end
- Although quiet, the backing track song still has a strong bassline and drumbeat.

SWAT:

- Extremely heavy baseline and drum beat, kicks in straight away.
- Diegetic dialogue is played over the top of this soundtrack - legible but inconvenient.
- Additional sound played throughout -- gun shots etc.
- Comical lines heard throughout
- Dialogue used as a voiceover to explain plot

Lighting and shots

I have made a clear plan for each shot from our storyboard indicating the light source position and the position of the camera in relation to the actor or piece of mise-en-scene.

Final Storyboard

Original Story board

Editing - colour correction

Using Final Cut Pro I colour corrected each of the shots create a theme/style to run throughout. By creating more of a uniform look the trailer flowed better and looked much more professional.

When colour editing on FCP you have control over the lows, mids and highs, allowing detailed correction to be carried out.

Some shots were colour edited differently - such as the scope and cctv shots - to make them stand out.

Editing - CCTV

To create the cctv shot i used Final Cut Pro.

The first thing i did was select the piece of footage.

Then I colour corrected it to a green tint.

I then added some noise to create the grainy texture on the visual.

After this I added a banding effect which is usually associated with cctv monitors.  I did this by adding a square shape over the footage, changing the opacity and feathering the edges.

To make this banding effect move I used keyframes, which allows to shape to move between 2 set points in the duration of the shot.

Editing - the scope shot

In our trailer, we wanted to create the shot through the sniper rifle's scope.  In order to do this I began using Adobe Photoshop to create a png file.  I used a png because these files are image files that support transparent backgrounds.

I created a vignette in the shape of the scope.

I also added some shading to imitate the look of a curved lens.

A green tint was then added to finalise the effect.

I then layed it over the footage taken from the high angle to create the desired effect using final cut pro.

When filming this angle, we used a fast pan to create the illusion of the gun going off which matched the scope to look like the shot was from the sniper's point of view.

Film Ratings

12

Suitable for 12 years and over. No-one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult.
Theme: Mature themes are acceptable, but their treament must be suitable for young teenagers.
Language: The use of strong language (eg 'f***') must be infrequent. Racist abuse is also of particular concern.
Nudity: Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context it must be brief and discreet.
Sex: Sexual activity may be implied. Sex references may reflect what is likely to be familiar to most adolescents but should not go beyond what is suitable for them.
Violence: Violence must not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated.
Imitable techniques: Dangerous techniques (eg combat, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on imitable detail or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.
Horror: Sustained moderate threat and menace are permitted. Occasional gory moments only.
Drugs: Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or instructional.
Discrimination: The film or DVD as a whole must not approve of language or behavior that would offend a person’s religion, colour, gender, sexuality or disability. Aggressive use of this type of language and behavior is unacceptable unless clearly not approved of.
15

This would be the most suitable rating for our film as there are common references to violence, but this is not the focus of the film.

Filming: Day 5

Day: 5

Date: 4/1/13
Time: 9:00am -12:00pm
Group Members Present: Summer, Farah
No. of Actors Present: 2/5 actors

Filming

  • We filmed the final shots working with the rifle. We had to focus a lot on continuity as one of the shots linked to another that we had filmed on a separate day.
  • The shots we took on this day were often very technical such as working with focus and exposure so took a long time.

 Location/Mise en scene

  • We worked both on the industrial estate and on a yard. The yard created issues due to mise-en-scene and the shots had to frame only the actor to cut out inappropriate mise en scene which could not be moved.

Sound

  • We used the zoom recorder to capture the detail of the audio of the shots and used the clapper board in order to sync these in post production.  We also mounted the sound recorder on the camera to record sound in the tracking running shots.

What to do next

  • All we have left to do is record the voice over to edit in with the trailer.

Filming: Day 4

Day: 4

Date: 14/12/12
Time: 4:00pm -6:00pm
Group Members Present: Summer
No. of Actors Present: 1/5 actors

On the fourth day of filming, were working with 1 actor, working mainly on photography and not filming on any particular scenes

 Location/Mise en scene

  • We used the industrial estate as location mainly based at the tanker and the wall where our photo shoots are based
  • The tanker was used heavily as the actor was able to interact and climb it

Character head-shots

  • We worked a lot on this on this day and took head-shots and body shots for the website/poster as well as taking pictures of the actors interacting with the set for the same purposes.

Complications

  • Because we didn't have clearance at this point to film on the streets with replica weapons we could not film the scenes that we had hoped to on this day and so had to add an additional day of filming for this once we had permission

What to do next

  • Film final shots with the last actor
