Final Location

For our final location we will be using the Thames Barrier Industrial estate.

Following our research we knew that we were looking for an old industrial area which could potentially look deserted. Upon finding the estate, we were happy to acknowledge that it met our needs almost perfectly providing us with an area which could hold any hiding places for our characters and somewhere where we could adapt shots from the storyboard around.

We secured several locations to film inside such as the barrier animal care clinic, which holds old kennels with cages which we are able to use for
jail cells as well as an industrial style yard.  We
also secured an old tyre unit which we are able to clear and use as a disused building with industrial looking metallic walls ideal for our setting.

The estate has many side roads with industrial units either side which have the perfect qualities for the effect that we are looking for. There is a tankard and several metallic structures around the estate which can be used as hiding places in our shots.  We also located an old abandoned pub called 'The Victoria'which has the perfect atmosphere for the film in its basement due to its concrete floors, natural cold lighting and steel bars.

Location Research- finding the right location

One of the most important issues we are facing is finding a location we want for the film trailer, and one that we are allowed to film at, we have all been researching a lot into this as it is a key element and we can't film until we find a location.

Location scouting-

When location scouting we were looking for sites which we would be able to get too fairly easily, ideally looking for places within or around London. This location is positioned in West London, making it ideal for filming as it still within the Capital. This was a vital aspect when considering filming the trailer as we may need to re-shoot several times, to get footage we wanted to use so this location was appealing.

  •  The grade II listed building is large and the outside has been not that well maintained, meaning some of the paint has peeled away, giving the idea that the house has not been cared for or has been deserted.
  •  Because of its large size it has a grand feel to it, and our group were considering using it in an opening scene to show an idea of wealth and power.
  •  The building is painted white, allowing us to play on connotations of innocence, purity- which are idea typically played on in the thriller/horror genre.
  •  The building is surrounded by large grounds which give it an air of isolation, and there are old dead trees surrounding the house- which give it an eerie, creepy atmosphere.

Inside

  • The idea of wealth and power is juxtaposed when you look inside of the building, as the inside is unfurnished and predominately empty, we could use this to demonstrate that there has been some sort of financial crisis which has led to people leaving.
  • There is however still a sense of grandre as the place is impressively large inside, however the inside is darkly lit, and relies only on natural sunlight, making the place slightly creepy, ideal for a thriller film location.
  • There is a huge chandelier still hanging in a old dining hall, which suggests an earlier time of wealth and also again reiterates the idea of abandonment.

  • Another characteristic feature of the house, is the staircase which would enable us to play around with levels, and angles i.e. it is a good landing space for a high angle or birds eye shot, as (shown in the below picture)

  • Underneath the house: is a large cellar.
  • This would provide a good shooting location, for a scene showing people hiding.
  • Or if we want to explore the idea of people living in captivity or being held against their will, we could exploit the connotations of entrapment that are commonly associated with basements or underground spaces.
  • The lighting in the cellars is entirely artificial- allowing for the possibility to completely control and filter the type of light we think would be most effective for our film and allowing us to experiment with using different lighting intensity levels.

  • The location offers a number of out houses
  • The benefit of having the outhouses is; they look quite rural and rustic so connote simple living, this means they contrast to the Grander of the rest of the outdoor space. So we could use them too possibly to demonstrate class, or social boundaries.

  •  It also has a lake- traditionally used in films either to represent danger (conventionally within thrillers lake’s are where unstable protagonists are found drown and thus create an enigma or they are used to show luxury and indulgence.

Location 2 reasearch

Outside

  • The outside view of our third location is very gritty and run down. It is an events place located underneath London Bridge which is ideal as it is not far away.
  • The car park would make good camera shots if we were to use and is in a very confined space which could suggest that the ‘victims’ are trapped and isolated away.
  • The fact that there are also not many windows can suggest that the location is locked away and there is little air and escape, inside.
  • Although, we would have to film at a time where there are no cars in the car park which belong to the public.
  • The dull, brown bricks with overgrown plants and weeds add to the effect of an abandoned area in the middle of nowhere where no one has been there to clean it up. This would create a sense of realise give a sense of enigma as to what would be inside a place like this.

Inside

  • This is a large, ruined, empty, derelict tunnel within the building. It looks like an underground mine and also gives the look of sewage tunnels. This suits our genre of a thriller/horror as the audience may find out what is lurking inside this creepy, disturbing and nightmarish place.
  • A large tunnel separates into two smaller tunnels. These two tunnels have a great effect as both tunnels juxtapose each other, having contrasting lighting of a warm, orange colour and a cold, blue/white colour. This could make the audience ask the question of ‘which tunnel is the best to go down?’ and ‘what happens if you go down the wrong tunnel?’ and also gives the sense of a ‘right or wrong’ and ‘good or bad’ situation.
  • This location would be ideal for a hiding place for specific ‘victims’ in the film. It stimulates the audience to ask the question of what you will find down in each tunnel, creating a sense of enigma/mystery which would suit our genre choice of thriller/horror ideally.
  • This location includes a source of lighting in the tunnel which would be very helpful when it comes to filming. The light beams off particular sections of walls which would be perfect if we filmed a scene where a person is receding out from the darkness and into the light.
  • The walls seem to have an orange tint to it. This could be useful in our film as a horror scene because it gives the effect of fire, warmth and danger which fits in with our genre of a thriller/horror.

  • This is another section inside the building. It looks like a film set itself which can be ideal as it has the look and feel of the sort of image we wanted to portray in our film.
  • This space includes many set-props including tables, chairs and pipes that would possibly be very useful in production to the filming.
  • This space could be used for action parts of our film where victims are fighting each other to the death, while blocking and hiding away from each other using the set-props.
  •  Each three windows have been graffiti on with the numbers 20, 17 and 21. This could be useful to use as a ‘countdown’ – having a time limit for winning the game.

  •       This is another area within the building. It can be portrayed as a bar or cafe which could be useful for our film if our ‘victims’ have a meeting for the ‘game’ they are going to play.
  •       The walls are painted in an orange/red colour which have connotations of fire, anger, danger and blood which fits our genre of thriller/horror perfectly.
  •       It would be a good atmosphere to portray at the beginning which will juxtapose what is about to happen to the victims in the upcoming scenes.
  •       The bar would be empty which indicates loneliness with a sense of eeriness and enigma within.

Location 1 Research

The Outside

  • This is an empty derelict house that we found that is located in East London. This is ideal as it is in our distance range.
  • From the outside, it is quite eerie looking with tinted, dark red/orange bricks, over-sized black doors and an old, uneven staircase trailing down the side of the building.
  • It gives a sense of realism and abandonment which can relate well to our genre of a thriller/horror.
  • The dark red colours have connotations of blood and danger which is exactly the kind of indication we want to be portrayed to the audience in our trailer.

The Inside

  • This is one of the rooms inside the building. It is very empty which indicates loneliness and also gives a sense of enigma/mystery to be portrayed to the audience.
  • Even though it is a dull and empty space, there are still some possibilities we could use some parts of the room as 'hiding spaces' for the 'victims' to use as a shield or to hide behind a trailer.
  • This space is clearly shown to be old, abandoned and gritty which is exactly what we want to show in our film trailer.

  • The grey colour shades have connotations of dirtiness, gritty and dull. This suits the genre of our film and would be a good place to film.
  • There are also dumps of rubbish splayed over the floor that can indicate that someone has been in the room before, which creates a sense of enigma, but can also indicate that it is abandoned rubbish that has been there rotting for a long time. This can convey a sense of enigma to the audience as to who was there to put there rubbish there.
  • There is also a traffic cone by the door which can suggest that it is a 'warning sign' for the 'victims' which indicated danger and destruction.
  • At this side of the hall, we can see that there are distorted, uneven flooring consisting of different levels. This can have a significance and similarity to the 'victims' lives and how their world has turned around in the 'fight to survive'.
  • The distorted ramp can also be used effectively for 'tripping' people up in an action scene where the 'victims' are running away from each other.
  • The high windows and ledges can be great to show that they are out of arms reach for the victims to escape adding to the sense of isolation and claustrophobia.
  • The use of steel pipes, railings and staircases are a perfect touch to add as it adds to the gritty feel of the room. This is great because we could also use these for sounds in the background of our trailer, with loud chimes from the bar railings making it seem eerie and mental 'clanging' sounds.
  • The stairs in the picture to the right would be great for a shot of people running away and even jumping off the railings.
  • The use of different levels in this picture would give us more opportunities to use a variance of camera angles such as high and low angles to signify dominance between the characters.
  • The broken down, torn and ripped pieces of wood and matter can be used as set-props for the 'victims' to use as weapons against each other. This can show the extent to which people would go in order for survival.

  • The image to the left shows two levels in the building. This hole in the floor looking down to the ground floor would be great to use an aerial shot to look down on 'victims' running around and hiding.
  • Low angle shots can also be used as an alternative to high angles to show 'victims' looking down through the hole trying to catch another 'player' in the game.
  • It could also be used as a trap door which would add to the enigma and horror feel to the genre for the audience.
  • The beams at the side can also be used as an 'obstacle course' while victims are chasing each other to the death.

  • The picture on the right shows the outside 'garden' of the building.
  • The run down 'garden' outside would make another suitable area to show in our film trailer.
  • The building looks very gritty and run-down and suits the genre of our film of a thriller.
  • Broken glass windows and abandoned wood, tables and ladders add to the enigma and destruction of the area. It could add suspense to the scenes with the dark hiding spaces of walkways leading inside the building.
  • The outside space could also be used as a main dual fight at the end of the film. This would add suspense to the audience and would be used as leading up to the 'main finale' of the film/trailer.
