Location 1 Research

The Outside

  • This is an empty derelict house that we found that is located in East London. This is ideal as it is in our distance range.
  • From the outside, it is quite eerie looking with tinted, dark red/orange bricks, over-sized black doors and an old, uneven staircase trailing down the side of the building.
  • It gives a sense of realism and abandonment which can relate well to our genre of a thriller/horror.
  • The dark red colours have connotations of blood and danger which is exactly the kind of indication we want to be portrayed to the audience in our trailer.

The Inside

  • This is one of the rooms inside the building. It is very empty which indicates loneliness and also gives a sense of enigma/mystery to be portrayed to the audience.
  • Even though it is a dull and empty space, there are still some possibilities we could use some parts of the room as 'hiding spaces' for the 'victims' to use as a shield or to hide behind a trailer.
  • This space is clearly shown to be old, abandoned and gritty which is exactly what we want to show in our film trailer.

  • The grey colour shades have connotations of dirtiness, gritty and dull. This suits the genre of our film and would be a good place to film.
  • There are also dumps of rubbish splayed over the floor that can indicate that someone has been in the room before, which creates a sense of enigma, but can also indicate that it is abandoned rubbish that has been there rotting for a long time. This can convey a sense of enigma to the audience as to who was there to put there rubbish there.
  • There is also a traffic cone by the door which can suggest that it is a 'warning sign' for the 'victims' which indicated danger and destruction.
  • At this side of the hall, we can see that there are distorted, uneven flooring consisting of different levels. This can have a significance and similarity to the 'victims' lives and how their world has turned around in the 'fight to survive'.
  • The distorted ramp can also be used effectively for 'tripping' people up in an action scene where the 'victims' are running away from each other.
  • The high windows and ledges can be great to show that they are out of arms reach for the victims to escape adding to the sense of isolation and claustrophobia.
  • The use of steel pipes, railings and staircases are a perfect touch to add as it adds to the gritty feel of the room. This is great because we could also use these for sounds in the background of our trailer, with loud chimes from the bar railings making it seem eerie and mental 'clanging' sounds.
  • The stairs in the picture to the right would be great for a shot of people running away and even jumping off the railings.
  • The use of different levels in this picture would give us more opportunities to use a variance of camera angles such as high and low angles to signify dominance between the characters.
  • The broken down, torn and ripped pieces of wood and matter can be used as set-props for the 'victims' to use as weapons against each other. This can show the extent to which people would go in order for survival.

  • The image to the left shows two levels in the building. This hole in the floor looking down to the ground floor would be great to use an aerial shot to look down on 'victims' running around and hiding.
  • Low angle shots can also be used as an alternative to high angles to show 'victims' looking down through the hole trying to catch another 'player' in the game.
  • It could also be used as a trap door which would add to the enigma and horror feel to the genre for the audience.
  • The beams at the side can also be used as an 'obstacle course' while victims are chasing each other to the death.

  • The picture on the right shows the outside 'garden' of the building.
  • The run down 'garden' outside would make another suitable area to show in our film trailer.
  • The building looks very gritty and run-down and suits the genre of our film of a thriller.
  • Broken glass windows and abandoned wood, tables and ladders add to the enigma and destruction of the area. It could add suspense to the scenes with the dark hiding spaces of walkways leading inside the building.
  • The outside space could also be used as a main dual fight at the end of the film. This would add suspense to the audience and would be used as leading up to the 'main finale' of the film/trailer.
